Academic Distinction : Dr. A. Michael graduated MBBS with distinction from Thanjavur Medical College in 1982. During his time as a student, he was recognised for his academic excellence, receiving Gold Medals in both Anatomy and Ophthalmology. His dedication to his studies and commitment to the field were evident from the outset of his medical education.
Postgraduate Training : Continuing his medical journey, Dr. Michael pursued and completed his MS in General Surgery at Thanjavur Medical College in 1985. He undertook his General Surgical training under the esteemed guidance of Professor S. Venugopalan, FRCS, Honorary Professor of Surgery, between 1982 and 1985. Dr. Michael continues to hold Professor Venugopalan in the highest esteem for his mentorship and influence during this formative period of his career.
Professional Journey and Achievements : Dr. A. Michael began his surgical career in Pattukkottai, where he dedicated himself to serving the local community. His pursuit of further expertise led him to obtain an M.Ch in Paediatric Surgery in 1993, followed by a DNB in Paediatric Surgery in 1994 from the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Egmore. He continued to advance his qualifications, earning the prestigious FRCS from Edinburgh, England, in 2011, as well as the FMAS certification.
Academic and Teaching Roles : Dr Michael has held numerous academic positions throughout his career. He served as Assistant Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the Egmore Institute from 1994 to 1995 and at Thanjavur Medical College from 1995 to 2006. His commitment to medical education continued as he contributed to both the ENT and General Surgery departments at Thanjavur Medical College between 2006 and 2015. Furthering his exposure to global medical practices, Dr. Michael worked as a clinical observer in Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Michael has been widely acknowledged for his dedication to teaching and postgraduate training, earning the respect and admiration of many students.
Recognition and Affiliations : His fellowships and memberships further highlight his professional credentials in several esteemed organisations, including the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the Association of Surgeons of India, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, is a founder member of the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India, and holds membership in both the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the Indian Society for Paediatric Urology.
Dr. Michael is an accomplished presenter, having won awards for papers at national conferences, including the Sundaram Award by the Association of Surgeons of India TN&P Chapter. He delivered the Mathias Oration at the TN&P ASI Conference 2013, Chennai, and contributed a chapter on Inter Sex Disorders to Dr. M.S. Ramakrishnan's Text of Paediatric Surgery. He served as President of the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons TN&P Chapter (2018–19).
His clinical leadership includes establishing M.R Hospitals in Thanjavur, supported by his wife,
Dr. Radhika. As a founder trustee of Jeeva Centenary Trust, he helped initiate oncology services in Thanjavur. Dr. Michael’s philanthropic work and involvement in the Association of Surgeons of India are highly regarded. He has organized live workshops at TN&P ASI Conferences in 2012 and 2018 at M.R. Hospitals, Thanjavur. In recognition of his service, the Indian Medical Association Thanjavur Branch awarded him the “Best Doctor Award.”
