About

Minimally Invasive Paediatric Surgery

Smaller Incisions. Specialised Techniques. Faster Recovery.
Where appropriate, minimally invasive techniques can be used for selected paediatric surgical procedures.
Paediatric laparoscopic surgery may offer:
• Smaller incisions
• Reduced postoperative discomfort
• Earlier mobilisation
• Faster recovery in appropriately selected children
• Reduced surgical scarring
The choice between open and minimally invasive surgery depends on the child's age, condition, anatomy and clinical requirements.

Mr Hospital

Paediatric Surgical Emergencies

Children with acute surgical conditions require prompt assessment and treatment.

Our team provides evaluation and management of paediatric surgical emergencies such as:
• Acute appendicitis
• Intestinal obstruction
• Intussusception
• Perforation
• Strangulated hernia
• Acute abdominal conditions
• Other surgical emergencies in children
Early recognition and timely surgical intervention can be critical, particularly in newborns and young children.

Surgery for Newborns

When Surgery Is Needed in the First Days of Life
Some congenital conditions become apparent immediately after birth and may require urgent surgical intervention.
Our paediatric surgical team works closely with neonatology, paediatrics, anaesthesia and critical care teams to provide coordinated care for newborns requiring surgery.
This multidisciplinary approach is particularly important for premature babies and newborns with complex congenital conditions.

Milestone at Thanjavur

Colonoscopic Reduction of Paediatric Intussusception
A Minimally Invasive Approach for Selected Children
Intussusception is an important cause of acute abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction in children. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent complications.

At M R Hospitals, the only hospital in Thanjavur, we offer colonoscopic reduction of intussusception in appropriately selected paediatric patients.
Using colonoscopy, the intussusception can be evaluated and, in selected cases, reduced without the need for an abdominal incision.

A Child-Centred Surgical Approach

Surgery can be stressful for both children and parents. Our approach focuses not only on the operation but also on the child's overall experience and recovery.
We emphasise:
Specialised assessment
Understanding the child's condition, age, development and individual needs.
Appropriate surgical technique
Choosing open or minimally invasive surgery based on what is safest and most appropriate.
Paediatric anaesthesia and perioperative care
Ensuring children receive age-appropriate anaesthesia and monitoring.
Family-centred communication
Explaining the diagnosis, treatment options and expected recovery clearly to parents.
Comprehensive postoperative care
Monitoring nutrition, pain, wound healing and recovery until the child is ready to return home.
