Mammography
Advanced Breast Imaging for Early Detection

At M R Hospitals, Thanjavur, our Mammography service provides specialised breast imaging to help detect breast abnormalities at an early stage, including cancers that may not yet produce noticeable symptoms.

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images of breast tissue and remains an important investigation for breast cancer screening and evaluation of breast symptoms.

What Is Mammography?

Mammography is a specialised X-ray examination of the breasts.
It can identify abnormalities such as:

• Small breast masses
• Microcalcifications
• Asymmetry in breast tissue
• Architectural distortion
• Other suspicious changes

Some abnormalities can be detected on mammography before they can be felt as a lump.

Screening Mammography

Early Detection Saves Lives
Screening mammography is performed in women who may not have any breast-related symptoms, with the aim of detecting breast cancer at an earlier and more treatable stage.
Regular screening recommendations depend on factors including:
• Age
• Family history
• Personal risk factors
• Previous breast abnormalities
• Previous breast cancer

Our medical team can guide patients regarding an appropriate screening schedule based on their individual risk.

Diagnostic Mammography

Mammography can also be used to investigate breast symptoms or abnormalities identified during clinical examination or other imaging.

It may be recommended for:
• A breast lump
• Breast pain requiring further evaluation
• Nipple discharge
• Changes in breast shape or appearance
• Skin or nipple changes
• Abnormal findings on another breast investigation
• Follow-up of previously identified breast abnormalities

Diagnostic mammography may be complemented by breast ultrasound or other investigations when required.

Mammography & Breast Cancer

Mammography plays an important role in the early detection of breast cancer.
When an abnormality is identified, further evaluation may include:
Clinical Examination → Mammography → Ultrasound / Additional Imaging → Tissue Diagnosis When Required → Specialist Treatment
If a suspicious lesion requires tissue diagnosis, appropriate biopsy and pathology services can be arranged.
Patients diagnosed with breast cancer can be evaluated through our multidisciplinary surgical and oncology services for appropriate treatment planning.

Comprehensive Breast Care

Breast health often requires more than a single investigation.
At M R Hospitals, patients can access coordinated care involving:
• Breast imaging
• General and breast surgical services
• Oncology
• Pathology
• Anaesthesia
• Other specialist services when required
This provides a seamless pathway from screening and diagnosis to definitive treatment.

Other Cardiac Conditions

Echocardiography can contribute to the evaluation of conditions such as cardiomyopathy, heart failure and other structural or functional cardiac disorders

A Patient-Centred Approach

Our team understands that breast investigations can cause anxiety.
Patients are guided through the procedure and the reason for the investigation, with appropriate follow-up arranged based on the findings.
